Starring:

Callies, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, David
Morrissey, Michael Rooker, and Melissa McBride
“The Walking Dead” opened its third season on Sunday, October 14 with
record-shattering ratings. The premiere
episode, ‘Seed’, garnered 10.9 million viewers making it the highest rated
episode in series history, and growing more than 50 percent over last season’s
premiere. Total viewer numbers rose to
15.2 million after the two encore telecasts Sunday. The season 3 premiere now
reigns as the biggest telecast for any drama series in basic cable history
among all viewers. Season 3 will have the largest episode order yet for the
show, totaling 16 episodes. The season will be split in two halves, eight
episodes each.
It’s safe to say “The
Walking Dead” got off to a great start with the season opener. Fans asked for
more zombies, gore, and action…and after seven months of anticipation, that is
exactly what they got and more. The
premiere episode gave viewers a taste of what to expect this season for the
survivors. The episode moves along at a much more deliberate pace, which will
hopefully continue throughout the season.
Although we get a glimpse of the prison at the end of season 2, it’s
established that the group has been jumping from house to house throughout the
winter. This time jump lets fans assume that as winter passed, the characters
had time to process Shane’s death and resolve their issues with each other. With
the few months gone by, it’s quite clear the survivors have adapted to their
on-the-move lifestyle, their survival skills have increased immensely, and
they’ve learned to work as a cohesive unit.
The characters have begun to evolve with desensitized states of
mind. Maggie (Cohan), Carl (Riggs) and
even Carol (McBride) have learned their way around weapons. After watching Rick
Grimes (Lincoln) struggle to keep this group of survivors alive for two
seasons, things seem to finally be looking up for him from a leadership point
of view. He’s starting to make big
decisions for the group, including taking the prison. Lori (Callies) questions
her pregnancy, which is becoming a huge issue as her due date draws closer. She
fears her baby will not be healthy and will be a risk to the rest of the
group. There may even be a relationship
sparking between Carl and Beth, while the relationship between Maggie and Glenn
(Yeun) is sure to become stronger.
‘Seed’ offered plenty of gruesome excitement. This season will surely not be lacking in
drama and action.
How can I not mention the new characters that will appear this season?
At the very end of last season, we see Andrea (Holden) saved from walkers by a
mystery character in the woods. Well, for anyone who has read the comics, it’s
no secret that was the first appearance of the bad-ass, Michonne (Gurira), a
solo who’s already got the art of survival all figured out. She’s known for her
trademark weapon, a katana, and her signature “pets”, two walkers with no jaws
and no arms. It will be interesting to
see how she fits in with the rest of the group.
The governor (Morrissey) will definitely be a plot-twisting character
as well. The biggest anticipation for
this season would probably be the return of Merle Dixon (Rooker). We haven’t
seen Merle since he was left to die chained to a rooftop in Atlanta during
season 1. We already know from leaked photos that he’s coming back and probably
with a vengeance. His return to his
brother, Daryl (Reedus), and the rest of the group should make for an intense
reunion.
